The Via Matildica del Volto Santo is an itinerary connecting the most important spots in the life of Matilde di Canossa, a spectacular combination of history, religion and tradition. Lombardia, Emilia Romagna, Toscana are connected in a path from Mantua to the Po Valley, then up to the Appennines and descending gently until the city of Lucca. The path begins in Guastalla in the fertile Po valley and slowly approaches the Reggio Emilia city in the northern area, where you will notice the futuristic and modern architecture designed by Santiago Calatrava. Moving south past the city, you leave the green valley to climb towards the Appennino Reggiano, time slows down here, the atmosphere becomes more relaxed and suddenly you find yourself among historic memories.
First day
Guastalla – Reggio Emilia High Speed Train Station – Reggio Emilia (30 km)
Second day
Reggio Emilia – Vezzano Sul Crostolo (13,4 km): Reggio Emilia – Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Pellegrino – Vasca di Corbelli – Vezzano Sul Crostolo (car transfer to the hotel in Quattro Castella).
Third day
Vezzano Sul Crostolo – Carpineti (23 km): car transfer from the hotel in Quattro Castella to Vezzano – Vezzano Sul Crostolo – Casina – Carpineti.
Fourth day
Carpineti – Castelnovo Ne’ Monti (option 1 – 13 km) or Toano (option 2 – 17 km)
Option 1 (not part of Matilde’s Path): Carpineti – Castelnovo Ne’ Monti (Bismantova Rock)
Option 2 (part of Matilde’s Path): Carpineti – Toano.
At the end of the day come back to the starting point by public transport or car transfer (cost not included).
