This basilica is one of the oldest churches of the city but it now combines different styles from different ages: it was founded in the 10th century and reconstructed in 1514-23, whereas the striking plastic façade adorned with statues was designed by Giovan Battista Cattani in the 18th century.
The Baroque appearance of the church is in strong contrast with the grey stone bell-tower standing next to it, a remarkable but incomplete octagonal building from a design by Cristoforo Ricci reviewed by Giulio Romano.
On the edge of the parvis there are six large Veronese red marble lions of 1504; for more than five centuries this motionless animals have witnessed trades in the marketplace, the local’s chatter and even small revolutions, becoming true friends of Reggio people.
